Off-grid stays on a clay farm in the Overberg

A whitewashed farmhouse on the farm, two hours from Cape Town. Open plan, with an indoor fireplace, flowing through double doors to a spacious outdoor entertainment area with a fire pit and ample seating. The ground floor bathroom opens into a walk-in outdoor shower built with a natural clay wall.

The main bedroom sleeps two on a king size bed with a fireplace at the foot of it. The loft sleeps two more on a second king. Two half barrels of firewood come with your stay, along with kindling and firelighters made on the farm.

As dusk falls, gather around the fire pit for stargazing and fireside conversation beneath clear country skies.

Skaapskraal is a clay camp shaped by hand over several years. Sculpted earth walls curve around a fire court, a braai station, an open kitchen and four glamping tents, with the village below. Each tent sleeps two on proper beds with fresh white linen.

One open living area holds the fire pit, a long teak table, cast benches and log stools under a roof. Indoors, a bathroom with basin, toilet and shower, plus an outdoor shower, all built in clay. Gas hot water and power.

The whole camp is yours alone. Nobody else is booked in while you are here, and the whole fourteen hectares is yours to wander: up past the dam, to the natural pool with its valley view, and onto the ridge for sunset.
